Washington, DC; April 10, 2013 – The polystyrene foam insulation industry represented by the Expanded Polystyrene Industry Alliance (EPSIA) and the Extruded Polystyrene Insulation Association (XPSA) released the following statement in response to EPA’s announcement that it will begin a risk assessment this year of 23 chemicals, with a specific focus on flame retardants, to evaluate their effects on health and the environment as part of the agency’s Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Work Plan:
“The polystyrene foam insulation industry looks forward to providing its knowledge and experience to assist the EPA in taking a balanced approach to its recently announced chemical risk assessment, which includes fire retardants.
When applied to foam insulation, flame retardants provide an important layer of fire safety that ensures the insulation is protected against ignition throughout its life cycle. Flame retardant chemicals employed by the polystyrene foam insulation industry have been successfully used for decades in a wide range of applications. We are encouraged that EPA already has deemed 50 flame retardant chemicals as “unlikely to pose a threat to human health” in an earlier screening and look forward to a balanced approach moving forward.”
